Clarisa Bartlett Austin was a very strong pioneer woman; she married Cornelius Austin on September 6, 1812, in Lyons, New York, during his War of 1812 service time. The Austins were the third pioneer family to settle in the Walled Lake, Oakland County, Michigan area. She had to be hardy to give birth to and raise 14 children under those conditions. In addition, Cornelius was portrayed in the book, H.O. Severance, "The Story of a Village Community," G.E. Stechert & Co., 1931,as the consummate pioneer living in fairly primitive conditions. Clarisa was right there beside him, keeping the house and garden and holding the family together.
