John J. Poister of Manhattan, NY was born in 1924 in Ohio, the son of Ralph Seymour and Beatrice (Jeavons) POISTER. He died, June 30, 2011 in NY. A memorial service was held later. Surviving was his 2nd wife, Carol Poister of 26 years and two sons, John, Jr. and Geoffrey POISTER.

John was a graduate of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He served in the China-Burma-India Theater in WWII with the 490th Bombardment Squadron. After a career as creative director for various advertising agencies, in 1969 he founded General Strategics, Inc, a New York-based creative communications consulting firm specializing in food, beverages and travel marketing which encompassed two subsidiaries: International News Features Network and Poister Productions. He was a chevalier honoraire of the Confrere des Chevaliers du Tastevin and was a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals, the Wine Media Guild, and the University Club. An accomplished outdoorsman, he was a lifetime member of the Camp Fire Club of America in Chappaqua, New York. His passion for Big Band music started in his teenage years at Chicago's New Hyde Park High School where he and classmate Mel Torme (the Velvet Fog) started a dance band. He was an expert mixologist, distinguished author and prolific food and travel journalist and columnist for various publications, and a resident of Manhattan for over 40 years.

JOHN'S SON wrote: My Dad came up with the idea for "The Pyromaniac's Cookbook; the Best in Flaming Food and Drink" when he was a successful advertising executive in New York. Cooking was a hobby--and flambe cooking was his passion. He spent much of his adult life gathering recipes and he tested them on family and friends. Needless to say we all saw a lot of flaming dishes. The book attracted some attention and Dad appeared on the daytime Dick Cavett Show (this was 1968), the Mike Douglas Show and a few other daytime talk shows.

JOHN'S SISTER, Patricia Poister born Nov 12, 1926 in Ohio, died Dec 27, 2008 of Smethport, Mckean co., PA, formerly of Seweckley, PA.

JOHN'S DAUGHTER, Diana Elizabeth Beeson Real died Feb. 11, 2011 age 57 at home in Malahat, Canada of cancer. She was born August 14, 1953 in Evanston, IL to John and and his 1st wife, Barbara (Riepe) Poister Donner.
