Penelope Elizabeth Bailey was first married to Gabriel Floyd Johnston, and was the mother of one son and one daughter. She divorced Gabriel F. Johnston. Her marriage record to Archibald Lingan erroneously spells her name as Johnson, which is incorrect. She was a famous painter and sculptress in Houston, Texas, and ran her own school. Her obituary was published in the San Antonio Express, San Antonio, Texas on Monday Morning, October 31, 1943, as follows: Famed Texas Artist Dies at Houston. By: Associated Press, Houston, Texas, Oct. 31-Mrs. Penelope Lingan, 82, one of Texas' most widely known artists and a resident of Houston for 61 years, died here Saturday night. Mrs. Lingan was a painter and sculptress, whose work is to be found in Yale University, in the state capitols of Texas and North Carolina, and in scores of Texas homes. Her school of art in Houston was attended by many students who afterward earned laurels for themselves. Mrs. Lingan was a member of the Colonial Dames of America, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the Confederacy, and an honorary member of many other clubs and organizations in Houston. Mrs. Penelope Lingan Buried at Houston. HOUSTON, Texas, Oct. 31 (AP). "Funeral services were held Sunday with burial in Forest Park Cemetery for Mrs. Penelope Lingan, 82, one of Texas' most widely known artists and resident of Houston for sixty-one years who died at her home here.

Mrs. Lingan was a painter and sculptress, whose work is to be found in Yale University, in the State Capitols of Texas and North Carolina, and in scores of Texas homes. Her school of art in Houston was attended through many years by many students who afterward earned laurels for themselves.

Mrs. Lingan was a member of the Colonial Dames of America, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the Confederacy, and an honorary member of many other clubs and organizations in Houston.

She retired from active work about two years ago.

Born in Black Mountain, N.C., she received her first artistic education, in music, as a student of Queen's College, Charlotte, N.C. She later studied painting and sculpturing at Sophie Newcombe College, New Orleans, and the Chicago Art Institute. At the latter school she was a student of the famous sculptor, Lorado Taft.

Her portraits of George Bernard Shaw and his biographer, Archibald Henderson, hang in Yale University, and her portrait of Gov. Miriam Amanda Ferguson is in the rotunda of the State Capitol at Austin.

She is survived by two sons and a brother of Houson."
