Jakson W. Spires, 53, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2005, from a brain aneurysm, at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center, Fort Pierce.

He was born in Jacksonville and lived in Fort Pierce for three years, coming from Raleigh, N.C.

He was a musician, songwriter and professional drummer with the bands Blackfoot and Southern Rock All Stars.

Survivors include his wife, Sherry Spires; three daughters, Selara Spires of Pennsylvania, Ameek Spires of Wisconsin and Jessica Jones of North Carolina; son, Jakson Paul Spires of Pennsylvania; brother, Steve Spires of Jacksonville; and five grandchildren.

Arrangements are by All County Funeral Home & Crematory, Stuart.


Jakson "Thunderfoot" Spires, founding member of Blackfoot, wrote or co-wrote nearly every Blackfoot song recorded from 1969 until 1986, including two of the band's biggest hits, "Highway Song" and "Fly Away"..

Between the years when the band separated and now, he has had several projects such as Drivin' Sideways, The Conqueroots and Southern Rock All Stars.

In addition to performing in America and Europe, he had recorded numerous sessions with legends such as Benny Mardones, Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy and blues greats Willie Dixon and Albert King, just to name a few. Jakson, also known as "Thunderfoot", continued to ignite crowds with his powerhouse drumming and creative style.

Jakson Thunderfoot Spires, drummer of Blackfoot (from 1969 to 1986, and then for the reunion tour which was taking place when he passed) and the Southern Rock Allstars, left this world on March 16, 2005 from a blood clot which was compared to a brain aneurysm. Jakson co-founded the band Blackfoot. He wrote/co-wrote, their two biggest hit songs; "Highway Song" and "Fly Away". Jak has also recorded with many legendary musicians over the past few decades.

He was working on his new project named "Thunderfoot" which the cd is due to be released in 2006 featuring Jakson's final studio work.

Each year in Ann Arbor, MI in April, there is a benefit honoring this very special man, in which all proceeds go to benefit The Performing Arts Center of Ann Arbor to give scholarships to children.

To know Jak was to love him...from the big bear hugs to the huge grin! Jakson will be missed very much by everyone that he touched in this life!
