On January 5, 1841 as A.V. Brumby, he married A.E. Wallis at Perry County, Alabama.
They were the parents of seven children including a child that died in infancy.
Arnoldus Vanderhorst Brumby was the eighth child of Thomas Brumby and Susannah Greening. He was born December 10, 1809 in the Sumter District of South Carolina. He graduated from the United States Military Academy (USMA) in 1835. He was promoted to Brevet Second Lieut. with the 1st Artillery on July 1, 1835 and became a Second Lieut. on December 31, 1835. He served in the garrison at Fort Johnston, North Carolina and in the Seminole War during 1836. He fought in the Skirmish of Okihumphy Swamp on March 30, 1836. He resigned from the United States Army on June 30, 1836. He was a civil engineer in Alabama from 1836 to 1838. Then he was a tutor of mathematics and instructor of civil engineering at the University of Alabama from 1838 to 1840. He was awarded the degree of A.M. from the University of Alabama in 1839. He was an attorney in Alabama from 1840 to 1846, during which time he married Ann Eliza Wallis on January 4, 1841 in Georgia. He became the Superintendent of the Alabama Military Institute from 1846 to 1849. In 1851, he built Brumby Hall, his personal home. He was the founder of the Georgia Military Institute, which became state funded in the late 1850s. He was Superintendent of the institute from 1851 to 1861. The Brumby family was considered to be part of upper Marietta society. Today his home is considered a prime example of the raised Greek revival cottage. It was restored to its original condition in 1925 and is now owned by the City of Marietta. It is located on the site of the Georgia Military Institute which is now the Marietta Conference Center and Resort. He was an Aide-de-Camp with the rank of Colonel to Governor Cobb of Georgia from 1852 to 1854 and to Governor Johnson from 1854 to 1856. In 1853, he was a member of the Board of Visitors to the USMA. He was a Colonel in the 14th Georgia on July 17, 1861, resigning on November 21, 1861. After the Civil War ended he became a planter. He lived in Atlanta from 1867. On April 15, 1887 he died at the age of 75 in Cartersville, Georgia and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.
