Charles S. McDowell, Jr.

Eufaula, Alabama - Charles S. McDowell, Jr., died Saturday night at a Tuscaloosa hospital. He was 72 and was a well known Eufaula political figure of Alabama.
He was a candidate for lieutenant governor in 1922 and for governor in 1926. He had been in poor health for the past few years, but his death was unexpected.
His active political life from his young manhood included serving as a delagate to three Democratic national conventions, and he was a member of the State Senate from 1919 to 1923 and 1930 to 1934. He was defeated by the late Bibb Graves in the governor's race in 1926.
Mr. McDowell was born in Eufaula on 17 Oct 1871 and attended the University of Alabama from 1888 to 1889. While serving as probate clerk in Barbour County in 1895 to 1897, he read law and was admitted to the bar in 1896. He practiced independently until March 1912 and then formed a partnership with Judge Perry Thomas of Eufaula.
From 1897 on, Mr. McDowell served in a variety of political positions. Included were member of the staffs of Governors Jelks, Henderson, and Johnson; Member of the board of trustees of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute; Member of the board of the University of Alabama; President of the Alabama Bar Association; Associate with his brother, Arch McDowell, in the practice of law in the firm of McDowell & McDowell.
Mr. McDowell was a member of the Presbyterian Church, a Mason, a Knight of Pythias , a Red Man, and a Woodman of the World.

Lieutenant Governor of Alabama. Served as acting governor for 24 days when Governor Brandon spent 21 days in New York City chairing the state delegation to the 1924 Democratic National Convention. Also served as mayor of Eufala, Alabama and as a member of the Alabama state senate.
