EUGENE E. "GENO" TRAXLER, age 84, passed away late Monday evening, March 4, 2013 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital.

He was born August 29, 1928 in Mansfield to the late Roscoe "Bud" and Elize (Oster) Traxler. Geno was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving his country during the Korean War for 6 years in the 3rd Battalion, E Company.

He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 38 years of service as a mail carrier. A caring, knowledgeable man, he liked everyone and received the same back. He had a knack for remembering people's addresses and was known for his encouraging words and great advice. He was so proud of his grandchildren and treasured the special memories they created together.

His "weekly loop" of purchasing the paper, then driving from SR 314 to SR 97 by the lake through Lexington and back home was a great enjoyment. He loved his truck, putting over 250,000 miles during his travels. He could often be found smoking his pipe with Prince Albert tobacco. Geno volunteered his time at the Lexington Fireworks display for many years.

He was a long-time member of Diamond Hills Baptist Church and the Elks #2554. An amateur radio enthusiast, his call sign was N8CPT and he spent many hours talking with people from all walks of life.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 21 years, Mariam (Hardman) Traxler; children, Mike (Betty) Traxler, Jeanne (Mike) Baumann, Toy (Cheryl) Traxler, and Lugene Sqrow; grandchildren, Heather, Christopher, Aaron, April, Jason, Amy and Abby; stepchildren, Mike (Becky) Dilley, Todd (Barb) Dilley and Paul (Tiffany) Dilley; step grandchildren, Michael, Rochelle, Todd, Jeremy, Stevie, Alexis, Luke and Logan; two nephews, Tobin and Eddie; and his best friends, Roger Metcalf and Sue Neal.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Traxler.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond Street, Mansfield with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. Rev. Christopher Thomas will conduct the service. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery with military honors presented by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Squad.

Contributions in memory of Geno's life may be made to the Salvation Army.
