BERT STARKEY, LIFELONG COUNTY RESIDENT, DIES Bert Starkey, 71, a life-long resident of Collingsworth County, died in Shamrock General Hospital at 7:45 p.m. Friday, April 7. He had been ill several months, but until only a few weeks ago, he continued his usual activities. Mr. Starkey was a farmer-stockman and lived north of Dozier. The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Starkey, who settled here in the early 1890's, William Albert Starkey was born in the Plymouth community July 17, 1895. He grew up there and attended the Plymouth schools, then one of the larger rural schools of the county. About 50 years ago, Mr. Starkey came to Wellington to work as a barber and later established his own shop. A man of genial nature, he made a circle of friends equalled by few in the town's business community. About 1945, he sold his shop and moved to his farm at Dozier, but he continued to work as a barber in Shamrock. Mr. Starkey was married to Miss Lula Walker, a member of another pioneer family, April 17, 1917. She preceded him in death November 9, 1965. They had no children.
