Falling headfirst into two feet of water in a barrel on the bank of the Mouse river, Larry, four year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nichols, living on Orchard Street In Minot, was drowned late yesterday.

The boy had been playing in the backyard of his home, which is situated near the river south of the buffalo pasture in Roosevelt park, and it Is believed that he leaned over the top of the steel barrel and accidentally toppled in.

When discovered by his mother, the youngster had been In the water only a short time, but life wag extinct and desperate efforts made by firemen and citizens to resuscitate him were unavailing.

The barrel on the river bank was used to store water for horses, and was less than half full at the time Larry fell into it. The mother said that she became aware of the boy's absence only a few minutes after she had last seen him, and she immediately went to the river bank to look tor him, there discovering him in the barrel.

Larry Duane Nichols, who was born In Minot, was tour old last
February 19.

He was one of 10 children of Mr. and Mrs. Nichols, all of whom live In Minot with the exception of a daughter, Mrs. W. C, Darby, St. Paul. The other children are: Morris, Marcus, Gifford. Clive, Charles, Lyle, Sybil and Carley.
