Soviet composer. Winner of the Stalin Prize, second degree (1948), Honored Artist of the Chuvash ASSR (1962). He was born in the village of Kanavino (now within Nizhny Novgorod). He mastered the balalaika, mandolin, guitar, and at 13 years old, he independently played the piano. Since 1924, he worked part time as an pianist at the railwaymen club. He studied at the College of Nizhny Novgorod (1925-1929), and then went to the faculty, graduating in 1936.
