Sept. 24, 1920 - Sept. 12, 2012
Funeral services will be held for Lt. Col. Carl Alexander Forslund, U.S. Army retired, 91, of Coos Bay, at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at Nelson's Bay Area Mortuary, 405 Elrod Ave. in Coos Bay. The Rev. Don Berney will officiate. Military honors will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Carl was born Sept. 24, 1920, in North Bend, the son of Ernest A. and Lena F. (Matson) Forslund. Carl was raised in the town of Delmar with his three siblings and enjoyed a happy life on the small family farm. Carl passed away peacefully, into his savior's arms, Sept. 12, 2012 — just shy of his 92nd birthday.
Carl graduated from Marshfield High School in 1938 and in February of the same year, joined the Oregon National Guard Band playing trumpet, as a corporal. In 1942 Carl completed Officers Training School and was commissioned as second lieutenant into the U.S. Army. His impressive military career took him overseas to serve in Europe and twice in Germany, retiring as lieutenant colonel with more than 30 years of service in 1966. He distinguished himself as an outstanding officer and received several awards and medals to include American Theatre Op Ribbon, Army Occupation Medal, American Defense Medal, WWII Victoria Cross (only a 181 total recipients) and the Purple Heart.
Carl married in 1947 to his devoted wife, J. Bernice Forslund with 4-year-old daughter, Carol. Later, Robert Forslund was adopted from Germany and the family became four. After retiring to Coos Bay, Carl and Bernice spent their time traveling together throughout the United States by motorhome. They visited family and friends on their travels always enjoying company and a good game of cards. In later years, Carl took loving care of his wife, until her passing in 2006. At the loss of his daughter, Carol, in 2010 Carl came to live near family in Poulsbo, Wash.
Carl was a loving husband, father, grandfather great-grandfather, uncle and friend to so many. He was a true gentlemen; one of an era gone by. He was known for his strength, kind and gentle spirit and wonderful sense of humor by all who were blessed to know him. He will be dearly missed, although we are thankful that he has gone home to be with his father, and family in heaven.
Carl is survived by his son-in-law, Gary Richards; grandson, Michael Shelton; granddaughter, Victoria (Shelton) Plooster and husband, Major Mark Plooster, U.S. Army; granddaughter, Elizabeth (Shelton) Mac and husband, T.K. Mac; eight great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice, in 2006; daughter, Carol Richards, in 2010; and three siblings, George Forslund, Ellen Forslund and Esther Forslund Spurgeon. Also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Ronald Shelton, Capt., Green Beret, U.S. Army.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Liberty Shores Assisted Living and Alzheimer's community, 19360 Viking Ave., N.W., Poulsbo, WA 98370.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson's Bay Area Mortuary, 541-267-4216.
