Jerry enlisted in the US Marine Corps on November 2 1964 in Lexington KY. In Vietnam he was serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 4th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF. Marines were enroute to their designated ambush site near the hamlet of Xom Dai An in the Hoa Van District of Quang Nam Province when there was an explosion. A claymore mine had been manually detonated by a VC who escaped in the undergrowth. Two men were killed and four were wounded, one of the casualties was PFC O'Nan who was killed by fragmentations wounds from the hostile explosive device.
