Sarah Agnes Leonard Roberts, 94, long-time Muskogee resident passed away on February 9, 2013 in Oklahoma City.
She was born October 15, 1918 in Kiowa, OK, to Harold Elbridge and Julia Maude (Frisbie) Leonard. She was the middle child of nine siblings: Floyd, Ruth, George, Mary, Agnes, Grace, Helen, Herbert, and Verna Mae.
She graduated from Muskogee Central High School in 1938 where she participated in such sports as basketball, volleyball, and badminton. She married Charles Jesse Roberts on November 8, 1940. Soon after he was killed-in-action on his 19th B-17 mission on January 9, 1944, Agnes brought her two young children back to Muskogee to establish their home. In 1945, Agnes and her mother and her sister, Mary, jointly purchased 1518 Dorchester, which was to be the family homestead for the next 61 years.
She was a Smitty Smith girl scout and taught crafts at the Wilburton Scout Camp. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout Troup leader to many Muskogee girls. She had a life-long passion for various creative hobbies including cooking, gardening, quilting, sewing, dollmaking, knitting, crocheting, and embroidery. She also loved classical music and hymns.
She greatly enjoyed her two church families that she was actively involved in during her adult life in Muskogee. First at the First Christian Church where she was the Financial Secretary with Muriel Mercer for many years, as well as being the teacher of the Cradle Roll Sunday School Class. Her final years in Christian service in Muskogee were spent at the York Street Christian Church as an active member and the Financial Secretary. She left Muskogee and was moved to Oklahoma City in May, 2006, following a major stroke and she remained there until her death.
The highlight of her professional life began when she was hired by Citizens National Bank as a trainee in the Accounting Department. She subsequently advanced to be the Head Bookkeeper and when she retired in 1985 (after working for more than 30 years) she was a Vice-President of the bank. She was the person in the 1970-80's who oversaw the complex process of moving the bank from the hand/manual systems that had been the traditional banking methodology to the computerized systems still in use today.
Survivors inlcude her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Charles and Lesslie Roberts, Oklahoma City; her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and John Krehbiel, Altus, OK; seven grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Verna Mae Fletcher, Oklahoma City; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors. Agnes was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, and four sisters.
Funeral services will be Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 10:00 a.m in the Chapel of the Lescher-Millsap Fuenral Home, 2801 Chandler Road, Muskogee, Oklahoma. The family will receive friends of Agnes from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 14th. Viewing for her will be 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 15th. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Muskogee following the service.
