Son of John B. Key (b. June 19, 1794 in Camden Dist., SC - d. 1874 in Chesterfield, SC) & Temperance "Tempy" Threatt (b. between 1790 & 1806 in SC - d. before 1874). Jackson was born around 1837. In 1850, his family lived in Chesterfield District, SC.
He served as a private in Kelly's Company, South Carolina Light Artillery (Chesterfield Artillery), CSA.
