Police Officer Michael Crain was shot and killed when he and his partner were ambushed as they were stopped at a red light at the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Arlington Avenue at about 1:30 am. A subject opened fire on their patrol car, fatally wounding Officer Crain and severely wounding his partner.
The officers were ambushed by an ex-Los Angeles Police Department officer who had been fired in 2008. Several days earlier the subject had murdered the daughter, and her fiance, of an LAPD captain who had been involved in the personnel review that led to his firing. The subject then posted an online manifesto admitting to the murders and stated he would seek revenge on other officials involved with his personnel review and dismissal from the department.
Shortly before Officer Crain and his partner were shot, the subject shot and wounded an LAPD officer in Corona who was on a protective detail as a result of the threats made by the subject.
The subject remains at large.
Officer Crain was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Riverside Police Department for 11 years. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

A funeral service is scheduled for Michael Crain at 10:30 a.m. at the Grove Community Church in Riverside.
Crain, a 11-year veteran of the Riverside Police Department, was shot before dawn Thursday. Police said Crain, 34, and his partner were attacked as they sat at a red light in Riverside in a marked patrol car in what Riverside Police Chief Sergio Diaz said was a "cowardly ambush."
The men were allegedly fired upon by Dorner, a former LAPD officer who was last believed to be holed up in a burning cabin in Big Bear.
Crain leaves behind his wife, Regina; a 10-year-old son, Ian; and a 4-year-old daughter, Kaitlyn, according to the Riverside Police Department. He "loved attending dance recitals with his daughter and coaching his son's baseball team," according to a statement from the department.
Crain's "family and friends knew his usually straight face hid a huge personality," the department said. He spent his spare time restoring a classic 1970 Chevy Nova, which he loved, the department said.
Crain, a Marine Corps veteran, deployed twice to Kuwait as a rifleman in the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, 3rd Battalion 1st Marines, according to the Police Department. He will be buried at Riverside National Cemetery.
