Charles R. "Chuck" Clayton of Darlington, WI

Charles R. “Chuck” Clayton, age 95, of Darlington, Wisconsin, passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2014, at Sienna Crest Assisted Living in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. He was born September 22, 1919 in Mineral Point, the son of Raymond and Bertha (Golliner) Clayton. Chuck grew up in Mineral Point and attended Mineral Point High School. He was united in marriage to Marjorie Nielsen on October 7, 1941 at Congregational United Church in Mineral Point. Following his marriage he joined the Army in 1942 serving as a Medical Technician and was honorably discharged in 1945. Chuck delivered fuel oil for a short time before moving to Darlington, where he owned and operated Clayton Furniture and Appliance for many years. In 1984 he retired, but continued to work on vacuum cleaners and sewing machines for many years.

Chuck is survived by his children: Cynthia (John F.) Hassrick of Wisconsin, Roland “Niel” (Cecil) Clayton of Alabama, and Marsha (Paul) McDermott of Madison, Wisconsin; four grandchildren: Jill (Steven) Fisk, Jason (Jodi) McDermott, and Timothy and Christopher Grazen; many great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister: Marion Paynter of Darlington; and one sister-in-law: Arlene Clayton of Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Marjorie on July 26, 2004; and three brothers; Robert, Donald, and Everett Clayton.

Chuck was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Darlington, Darlington Free and Accepted Masons, and Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge #171 of Darlington. He will always be remembered by his family for the times they spent together on camping trips down south and out west and making jewelry. Chuck was an avid Rock Hound and enjoyed traveling all over the country in his RV.

A memorial service will be held Monday, November 17, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 339 East Louisa Street in Darlington with Rev. Dr. Connie J. Peake officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery in Darlington with military graveside rites to be accorded by Bates-O’Brien-Howe-Wiegel-Roelli American Legion Post #214 of Darlington. A visitation will be held Monday, November 17, 2014, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church. The Erickson Funeral Home in Darlington is serving the family.
