Records searches for David Cleveland Adams reveal a delayed birth certificate, showing he was born 10 Sep 1887 in Blountville, Sullivan County, Tennessee to Rhoda Elvira Holt and David Emory Adams. He was the 4th of their 5 children, with older siblings, Jacob Steven, Jessie Elijah, Mary Lucinda, and a younger sister Barbara E. born the year after he was.

In 1889, when David was a toddler, his father David Emory Adams died at age 35.

By 1897, his mother, Rhoda, had married William Thomas Shipley, and their children became additional siblings: Samuel Lee Shipley, John William Shipley, Oscar Joseph Shipley, and Verna Pet Shipley.

In the 1900 census, David was living with his mother, stepfather Will Shipley, and 6 siblings on a farm in Sullivan County, Tennessee.

David's step-father died in 1905, and David moved to California.

David married Thelma C Wodell, on Nov 8, 1915 in Los Angeles, CA. Thelma was born of Swedish parents in Wisconsin. She had a daughter, Muriel, a toddler, born about 1911, and David became Muriel's step-father.

On David Cleveland Adams WW1 draft registration card, dated June 5th, 1917, it describes him as being of medium height, medium build, with brown eyes, and dark brown hair. He reported being a Pool Room Prioprietor, living at 1309 Connecticut St, in Los Angeles with his wife and daughter.

By the time of the 1920 US Census, David, age 32, his wife Thelma,27, and stepdaughter Muriel Wadell, 8, were living in a rented place in Kern County, where David worked as a Roustabout for Associated Oil Company.

The 1930 US Census reveals that David and Thelma had married when he was 28 and she was 24. By 1930, they were living in a home they owned at 4323 54th Street,Maywood (in Los Angeles County). David was now a Well Puller for an unnamed Oil Company, and reported that he was not a veteran. Step Daughter Muriel was 18, and working as a waitress.

It is unclear what happened, but in the 1940 census, David Adams, 53 had been living as a lodger in the household of Helen McWhirter, 39, and Malvina Bache, 62, her mother, in Signal Hill (near Long Beach CA) since at least June of 1935.

When David registered, at age 54, for the WWII "old man's" draft, on 27 April 1942, he listed a Jess Adams of San Pedro CA as someone who will always know his address, rather than his wife or stepdaughter.

David Cleveland Adams died 19 Mar 1969 in Long Beach, Los Angeles County, CA.
