Greenhouses galore
A notable business at one time in Orchard Park was Jerry Brookins Greenhouses. A devotee of beautiful flowers, young Brookins (1864-1934) purchased an acre of land on the north side of East Quaker Road in March 1889, and by 1897, he had built 19,000 square feet of greenhouses. As originally constructed, Jerry Brookins Greenhouses had no entrance along East Quaker Road. The pictured entrance was added sometime after 1900 and subsequently removed for the erection of a two-story office building in 1920. In 1946, a similar entrance was again placed off East Quaker Road. The acreage is the site of today Brookins Green patio homes. Photo courtesy of Suzanne S. Kulpand Joseph F. Bieron, authors of "Images of America Orchard Park".
Printed in the Orchard Park Bee with photo of Greenhouse 8/16/2012.
