James was the son of Reynolds and Matilda (Hutchinson)Vangilder; brother of Isabelle, Leander, Levilda, Martin, Mary, William, Isaac and Albert. In 1860 the family lived at Franklin, Wayne County, Ohio.
James V. married Elizabeth Snure on September 4, 1862 at Wooster, Wayne County, Ohio. They were the parents of nine sons and three daughters: William H., Levi S., Reynolds T., James F., Lanora C., Matilda M., Charles S., Boas B., Algenon C., Jennie, and Joshua I. In 1870 the family lived at Clay, Kosciusko County, Indiana where James was a farmer; the post office was at Silver Lake. In 1880 the family lived on Center Street, Warsaw, Kosciusko County, Indiana. James was a Hardware Dealer. In 1900 they lived at Center, Marshall County, Indiana. The 1910 census shows James and Elizabeth living at Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana.
