Daughter of David and Hannah (Magner) Smith; sister of Albert, Ortha, Charles, Clara, Manerva and Bertha. Lettie's mother died in May, 1879 and she was raised by her Aunt Mary (Magner) Easterday and her husband, Jacob at Vernon, Crawford County, Ohio (1880 census). In 1900, she and Mary lived at Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana. She married Rev. Edward Phillip Scharf in 1915 and they were the parents of sons, Paul E. and David L.; living at Champaign, Ohio in 1920.

Crestline, Nov. 22, 1935 - Crestline friends have received word of the the death in Freeport, Illinois of Mrs. Edward Scharf, wife of Rev. Scharf, former pastor of the local English Lutheran Church.

Her tombstone reads LETTIE EASTERDAY; she may have been adopted by Mary and Jacob Easterday. The census reports list her as a niece. The Ohio Birth and Christenings Index shows her as Lettie Sharude Smith.
