JOYCE IRWIN SEARL, 74, died Saturday at Hemet Valley Medical Center. Born in Gilbert, Ariz., Mrs. Searl lived in Hemet since 1941. She was the wife of Leonard Searl, whose family came to Winchester in the mid-1880s and has farmed in the San Jacinto Valley for six generations.
The family sold more than 4,000 acres of land to Metropolitan Water District for the development of Diamond Valley Lake.
According to her family, Mrs. Searl was very involved in running the family's business interests, which included Casa del Sol RV Resort, the DeAnza Professional Building in Hemet, JoyLen Corporation and Searl Farms.
She was among the first Hemet Hospice volunteers and served for a time as president of the Hemet Women's Club. She helped establish the Ramona Hillside Players and played the part of Margarita in the Ramona Pageant in 1962 and 1963.
In addition to her husband of 54 years, her survivors include three sons, Marc and Pat, both of Hemet, and Tim of Temecula; two daughters, Laurie Milholland and Jill, both of Hemet; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Cora Young of San Bernardino; and a brother, Ralph Burk of Arizona.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Hemet. Inurnment will be private. Miller-Jones Mortuary in Hemet is handling arrangements.
