Verla was born to John Wilson and Bertha (Mott) Elder. She attended schools in and around Chariton, IA. As a young teenager, she accepted Jesus as her Savior at a tent meeting on the Chariton courthouse lawn. She attended Christian Union Churches for several years and was a member of Chariton Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at the time of her death.
On January 16, 1927, Verla was united in marriage to Earl Thomas Hopkins. The couple became parents to five daughters and one son. For many years Earl and Verla did income tax work in their home in Williamson. Verla's main calling was providing a stable home for her family.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and infant brother, Harold Leroy; her brother, Ralph Elder; her sister, Wilma Gardner; her husband, Earl, Sr.; and her son, Earl, Jr.
Her survivors include five daughters and their husbands and one daughter-in-law; Helen Dunshee and Ed Lampsa of Palmyra, WI; Pauline (Ron) Sonius of Rock Hill, SC; Pat (Ken) McKenzie of Greenville, SC; Ann (Bill) Keucher of Ocala, FL; Virginia (Larry) Schneider of Melcher-Dallas, IA; Vera Hopkins of Fayette, OH; 17 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren; 4 nieces and 3 nephews.
