Rev. James R. (J. R.) Alley of Church Hill entered eternal peace on Saturday (January 26, 2013) at his residence.

He was born on October 17, 1927 and was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County and a member of First Free Will Baptist Church of Church Hill. He proudly served his country in the Unites States Army during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines, and was Honorably Discharged. Rev. Alley was retired from Johnson Hilliard Sheet and metal after 35 plus years of service, many of those years were inside Tennessee Eastman where he was the superintendent of operations for Johnson Hilliard. Rev. Alley was ordained as a Free Will Baptist Minister in August, 1959. Over the years he pastored several churches in the East Tennessee area and also helped in several evangelistic revivals in East Tennessee seeing many souls come to the saving Grace of Jesus Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer K. Alley and Effie Huckaby Alley; mother and father-in-law, Bob Derrick and Anna (Adams) Derrick; sisters, Delphia Alley Cooper, Gladys Fern Alley and Naomi Alley Thacker; brothers, Robert, Kyle, Dallas and Raymond Alley; and son-in-law, Luther Kanipe.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Norma Derrick Alley; daughter, Deborah K. Alley and her husband, Rudy of Kingsport; son, David L. Alley and wife, Janice of Knoxville; grandsons, Spc. Matthew B. Alley, US Army, stationed in Korea, Aaron D. Alley of Knoxville; sister, Viola Alley Trent of Rogersville; step grandchildren, Chad Kanipe and family, Chris Kanipe and family, Gavin Phillips and Bridget Crawford; sisters-in-law, Helen Alley, Ruth Alley Christian and Sue Alley; and many nieces, and nephews, and cousins.

Calling hours are from 5 to 7:00 P.M. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home of Church Hill. Funeral services will be conducted 7:00 P.M. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Byrl Fann and Rev. Ron Cassidy officiating.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Monday at Church Hill Memory Gardens. Everyone is asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:15 A.M. to go in procession.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

The family wishes to thank all those who have been so helpful in ministry and caring to Rev. Alley. Special thanks to the caregivers at Amedysis Hospice, Dr. Daniel Carroll, Dr. Aaron Ross, Church Hill Rehab center and staff, and other Doctors who assisted during this time. And other special thanks to our neighbors, Mr & Mrs. Lowell Anderson, Mr. & Mrs. Chuck Livesay, Mr. & Mrs. Adam Anderson, who came at all hours of the day and night to assist during his illnesses. We would like to also thank all those who prayed and called for our family during this time.
