(October 24, 1920 - January 12, 2013)

Gwendolyn Zundel Sims Peterson Lavery

Our sweet mother, Gwen, 92, passed away on 12 January 2013. She had had dementia for over 8 years. She is now at peace with her family and her Heavenly Father.

Gwen was born 24 Oct 1920 in Salt Lake City, UT, to Luella and Ammon Sims.

Gwen went to Teacher's College in Flagstaff, Arizona, and graduated in 1942. Her first teaching job was at a Japanese Relocation Center in Rivers, Arizona, during WWII. It was here that she met, fell in love, and married her first husband, Walter George Peterson, an MP at the JRC. With the Army they lived in Michigan, and parts of California. After a third daughter was born in Lodi, California, Gwen went back to teaching and retired there in 1986. She loved her students and spent many hours planning to make their experience joyful. Most of her teaching career was spent with Kindergarteners.

Gwen was active in the LDS church and had many callings and friends in the Lodi Ward she attended. She had a lovely alto voice and enjoyed being active in the choir, roadshows, and the musicals they put on to raise money for the Ward building fund. She continued singing Lead with the Sweet Adelines, a barbershop style group, Delta Chapter in Stockton, California. She also sang with the Bountiful, UT, group when she lived there with her second husband. One of her last performances was at the same college she attended, now a university, in Flagstaff. She had over 15 years with the Sweet Adelines. She must be singing in heaven now!

Gwen married her second husband, William Lavery, in 1986, in the Oakland Temple, four years after Walter passed away. They had lived most of their life together in Anacortes, WA. In 2004 when Bill passed away Gwen came to live in Apple Village in Layton, UT, to be near her youngest daughter, Joyce Walth. In 2006 she had to be moved to a nursing facility, Crestwood Care Center, in Ogden, UT.

Gwen was known for her sweet smile and her warmth. Even when she no longer knew who people were she would give them a big smile.

Her family would like to thank all the caregivers at Crestwood Care Center for their care of our sweet Mother and Grandmother. We would also like to thank those of the Crestwood Branch of the LDS church for their love and concern for Gwen. We are also thankful for the prayers on behalf of Gwen and ourselves through this time.

Gwen is survived by her daughters; Gwynn Schmid of Galt, California; Carol (Ralph) Willis of Hemet, California; and Joyce (Wayne) Walth, of Ogden, Utah; 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, January 25, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist's Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Road. Friends may visit with family on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
