"I was baptized William Edward Warenskjold II, but in 1943 when my brother James came to Enid, Oklahoma to see me before going overseas, he asked if we couldn't do something about the spelling of our name since it was very confusing in the service. (He wanted the spelling changed to the way it was pronounced Warenskjold to Van Shaw.) I had had trouble also. We went to town and talked to an attorney that I knew. He said I could have the spelling of my name changed there since I had legal residence in Enid, but James would have to have it changed in Cleburne. Of course he did not have time to do that in Cleburne on his short leave. His name was never changed. I told the attorney to proceed with the changing of the spelling of my name which he did. The judge remarked what a waste of letters!
I wrote to my Mother telling of the proposed change. She wrote back immediately and said don't do it. By the time I received her letter the court had already acted. She never ever recognized the change and always addressed her letters Warenskjold."
