Most Ven the Rev. Gaston Fercken was born in Syria, the son of the Consul of the Netherlands William Esaïe Fercken and Lady Hortense Fautrier. He studied in Turkey and Switzerland where he prepared for the ministry. He was ordained a priest in 1884 by the Rt Rev. Littlejohn, Episcopal Bishop of Long Island, N.Y. He was Rector of Emmanuel Church, Great River, N.Y. when he became Grand Master of the Order of the Crown of Thorns. At the time he invested his successor, Most Ven. Rt Rev. René Vilatte, he was Rector of St. Stephen's Portland, Oregon. He became a missionary in 1894 and served in Turkey, France, Mauritius and Switzerland where he died in 1930. Grand Master Fercken was the beloved husband of late Selena Shober and the father of Phoebe, William, Francis H. and Gaston Jr.
