Circumstantial evidence is very strong that William Ellis and his wife Mary (one researcher who doesn't offer source names her as Mary Parke) were Joseph's parents. At the time of the 1851 census for Bury, Compton, PQ, Canada, there is a Joseph Ellis, age 19, born in England living in t he H/H of William Ellis and his wife Mary. Ten years later, at the time of the 1861 census for Bury, Joseph Ellis was no longer living in the H/H of William Ellis but lived in the next enumerated family which was that of Joseph Ellis and his wife Mary and two of their children. Both William Ellis, his wife Mary and their children John and Elizabeth were noted as being born in Norfolk, England, as it was also noted for Joseph Ellis. Living next to Joseph and his wife Mary are Alexis Sylvester and his wife Mary (Caya) who were the parents of Mary Sylvestre who married Joseph Ellis on 18 Aug 1857.
