Col. Peter Grosz, Jr., U. S. Army Retired, 83, of Stephens City and recently a resident of Golden Living Center – Rose Hill and Greenfield Senior Living in Berryville, died Monday, November 17, 2008 in the Winchester Medical Center.
Col. Grosz was born April 8, 1925 in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Peter and Elizabeth Wilhelm Grosz.
He and his family lived in Susank, Barton County, Kansas before moving to Russell, Kansas where he graduated from Russell High School. He attended the University of Kansas and graduated from the U. S. Military Academy, West Point, NY in 1946. He earned a master's degree from Caltech.
He served as an officer in The Corps of Engineers, U. S. Army for 28 years serving in Japan, Korea, Panama Canal Zone, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam. He had assignments with the Atomic Energy Commission and NASA, where he worked on the design of the Lunar Rover.
After retiring from the Army, he worked for J. A. Jones Construction Co., in Iran and in Hanford, Washington.
He married Constance Maxine Grosz on May 4, 1947 in Russell, Kansas. Mrs. Grosz died November 21, 2006.
Surviving are two sons, Paul K. Grosz and Craig D. Snyder and his wife, Diana, both of Stephens City, VA; a daughter, Pam F. Grosz of Salisbury, MD; a brother, Marvin Grosz of Denver, CO; two grandchildren, Leeann Rhoton and Brian Snyder, and two great-grandchildren, Miles Gayle and Kenny Snyder, all of Stephens City, VA.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 Noon Friday, November 21, 2008 at the Enders & Shirley Funeral Home Chapel in Stephens City with Rev. John Lock officiating.
Interment will be at a later date at the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY.
Military honors will be provided by Winchester VFW Post 2123 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 11:00 A. M. – 12:00 Noon prior to the service at the funeral home.
