August was born in Holzhausen near Vechta, Oldenburg in an area now called Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony), Germany.
He emigrated to the US ca. 1873.
He was co-owner of Muething and Hellmann, Carpenters and Builders with Henry Hellmann. Later he was a carpenter/contractor with his son Joseph, A. Muething & Son.
