A native of Delaware County, Indiana, he enlisted for the Union as a private in Co. K, 19th Indiana Infantry, on February 2, 1864. This regiment was part of the Iron Brigade of the West, or "Black Hats Brigade," which fought in many of the major battles in the eastern theater with the Army of the Potomac. He died of disease.
