Danny Robert O'Connell, 72, of Othello, passed away at home Saturday, July 14, 2012.
Dan was born in Denver, Colo., in 1939 to Dennis and Katherine (Bowman) O'Connell. When he was young, his family moved to Bakersfield, Calif. He met Emily during high school and they were married Sept. 1, 1958, celebrating 50 years together in 2008. They were blessed with their two children in 1964 and 1965, after which they moved to Washington.
He and Emily were the proud owners of O'Connell's Machine and Welding from 1977 to 1999, when they retired. Dan planted a walnut orchard on the back part of their property that he enjoyed taking care of and harvesting to help with their retirement. They enjoyed many hours working together to shell the walnuts to get them ready for farmers markets and for others around who knew about their walnuts. It was also a way their grandchildren spent time with them.
Dan enjoyed pursuing several different outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing and frogging. He has been after deer, bear, goat, elk, javelina and antelope. These pursuits have taken him to several different locations, but one thing that was always the same was that he would have at least one member, if not more, of his family with him every time he went. He enjoyed spending time with his family and helping teach them the things he knew and loved.
Dan and Emily served two missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the first from 2005 to 2006 in Salt Lake City as genealogy workers. He enjoyed learning about his ancestry and helping others do the same. They then went on to serve as temple workers in the Columbia River Temple, Richland.
Dan loved to serve those around him. It brought him the greatest joy to spend time with loved ones and his family. Dan enjoyed his life to the fullest.
He is survived by his loving wife Katherine Emily, along with his daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Carl Reynolds, his son Dan O'Connell, 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a brother and sister-in-law David and Melissa O'Connell, his sister Ellen Stefko and six nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Dennis and Katherine O'Connell.
There will be a viewing Thursday, July 19, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the 611 S. Seventh Ave. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint building. Friday, July 20, at 10 a.m., a viewing will be held with the funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. in the same building.
Arrangements entrusted to Danekas Funeral Home-Othello.
