James was born in Braganstown, County Louth, Ireland, sometime between 1842-1844. He came to the US as a young man and settled in Sherburne, MA. He enlisted in the army on July 13, 1864 and was mustered in on July 17, 1864. He was a private in the 8th Mass. Infantry, Co I. James served 100 days and was mustered out on Nov 10, 1864.
He married Alice Boylan on Oct 14, 1865 and settled in Lynn, MA. James and Alice had seven children and he worked as a Morocco Dresser.
James joined the Grand Army of the Republic Post 5 in Lynn, Mass on Dec 8, 1892. While a member there, his picture was taken along with other Civil War Veterans, and place in the Grand Hall.
James died of Apoplexy on Feb 12, 1912 and was buried in St Mary's Cemetery in Lynn, MA.
