Byron Lee Borup 1924 ~ 2009 Byron Lee Borup, born January 7, 1924, passed away peacefully at his home on July 19, 2009. Byron is survived by his wife VaLeen Margrett Hansen to whom he was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on April 19, 1954. He is also survived by three brothers, William, Keith and Rex, six children Byron L. Borup II, M. Brett Borup, Kelleen M. Giliam, Liana S. Borup, Cory H. Borup, Shawn E. Westrup, his 19 grandchildren and 30 great-grand-children. He was preceded in death by his parents Essie Idella Lee Borup and William Thomas Borup, and his siblings Melba, LeRoy, and Idella. Byron proudly served as an officer in the US Marine Corps. He was honorably discharged as a Major after serving in World War II and in an artillery division in the Korean War. Byron would frequently be seen wearing a Marine related hat and/or shirt. All of his children and grandchildren can sing the Marine hymn. Byron was a licensed civil engineer and worked for the California Department of Transportation for more than 35 years. After retirement he and his wife served as missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Armenia. Besides his family, one of Byron's greatest loves was Scouting. Being a scouter for more than 60 years, he had served in almost every Scouting position imaginable, including: Scoutmaster for many years, Explorer Post Advisor, 11 year old Scout leader, District Commissioner, and Council Commissioner. He received numerous awards from the Boy Scouts of America including the Silver Bear and Silver Beaver awards. Byron also loved to camp with his family and friends. His family has fond memories of camping all across the United States, but particularly in the West. He was a great outdoor chef and did all the cooking on camping trips. He was known by many for his outstanding Dutch oven skills. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, 23 July, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. in the LDS Chapel at 1876 N. 280 W., Orem, Utah. Friends may call on Wed. evening from 6:00 8:00 p.m. at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 S. State St., Orem, Utah or 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Orem Cemetery. Military Rites provided by the American Legion Post #72. The family would like to thank the wonderful people of Alpine Home Care and Hospice for all the sincere care and love that has been shared.
