Mary Violet Nichols McElwain was the daughter of Allen (CAP) and Katherine Zais Nichols; sister of Arthur, Rachel, Dale, Louise, Richard, Walter, Leona, Helen, Merle, Archie, Harold and two sisters who died in infancy.
She worked at Lawler, Nebraska and after her father's death, she moved to California, where she worked in both fish and peach canneries at Fullerton.
Mary met Forest McElwain at the Spit and Argue Club at the Pike, Long Beach, California. They were married January 22, 1941. Mary and Forest were members of the First Baptist Church of Long Beach and helped build the church building at 10th and Pine in 1949.
They were the parents of a daughter, Mary Arlene. After the death of their daughter, Mary and Forest raised their granddaughter, Cheri. Mary made her home with Cheri and her family for several years before becoming a resident at Bixby Knolls Tower, Long Beach.
Mary was the last surviving child of Allen and Katherine Nichols; preceded in death by seven brothers and six sisters.
