Roy J. Chittum, 69, formerly of Bedford County, died Wednesday, October 1, 2003, at 11:42 a.m. at Memorial Hospital, York. He was the husband of the late Gardenia B. Chittum.

Viewings were from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 Second Street, New Freedom with Masonic Rites by Charity Lodge #134 at 7:30 p.m. The service was held 10 a.m. Monday, October 6, at the mortuary with Rev. Daniel M. Krodel, Pastor of Bethlehem Steltz Reformed Church, Glen Rock, officiating. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens, York.

Born September 24, 1934, in Bedford County, VA, he was a son of the late Howard J. and Ollie Bales Chittum.

He was a member of Charity Lodge #134 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Freeland, MD, member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #537, Edgemere, MD and member of the United Birthday Club, New Freedom. He retired in 1994 from Schendler Elevator, Baltimore, Md., where he was employed as an elevator machinist mechanic.

He is survived by one son, Roy J. Chittum, Jr. of Spring Grove; one daughter, Rita Chittum Forbes of Jefferson; one brother, Franklin Chittum of Glen Rock; three sisters, Coralee Rucker of Hardy, VA, Phyllis Sweeney of Roanoke, VA, and Margaret Brown of Bedford, VA; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
