Barbary/Barbara Wallace was the daughter of Abram Wallace, who patented land in Butler County in 1818, and brought his family from Georgia to Alabama about that time. Barbary's exact birth date of September 5, 1802, has been handed down in family stories and repeated in genealogical articles, but without sources. I believe there was a Harrison-Wallace bible that descendants have copied dates from. There are just too many exact dates without any other sources -- such as Barbary Wallace and Jonathan Harrison's exact birth dates, an exact date for their marriage, the exact birth dates of their 17 children, and an exact death date for Jonathan's father, George Harrison.

One discrepancy is in Jonathan Harrison's birth date. An important source for data on the Harrisons, Wallaces and allied families is the book, "Moriah Baptist Church of Christ" by the late Richard G. Gibson (1994, privately published).

Jonathan Harrison's death is recorded in the Moriah Baptist church minutes transcript by Richard Gibson in this book: "Jonathan Harrison died July 10, 1871 age 82 years 4 months 13 days." This calculates to a birth date of February 27, 1789. Yet, in later articles by Richard Gibson and Eric O. Cates Jr. in "The Heritage of Butler County, Alabama" (2003), they both gave Jonathan's birth date as February 23, 1789.

Jonathan's wife Barbary/Barbara's death is also in the transcribed Moriah church minutes: "Barbara Harrison died June 10, 1888" (no age given).

In the church members list:

35. Jonathan Harrison E (baptised) 7/20/1831 Died 7/10/1871
36. Barbary Harrison E (baptised) 7/20/1831 Died 6/10/1888

-----------------------------------------------

In the "Barbara Harrison" story by Richard Gibson in the Butler County Heritage book, he gave an exact marriage date for Barbary and Jonathan, but without sources: "Jonathan Harrison and Barbara Wallace were married February 16, 1820 and were the parents of at least 17 children." Their first and oldest known child was born Dec. 3, 1820, according to the Butler County Heritage book story, "Jonathan Harrison Family Record" by Eric O. Cates Jr, so a marriage date of Feb. 1820 is very likely correct. But, what is the source of that date?

-----------------------------------------------

These are the first several paragraphs of Eric O. Cates' story, "Jonathan Harrison Family Record" (pages 272-273), in the Butler County Heritage book:

"Jonathan Harrison was the oldest child of George Harrison (See George Harrison article). He was born February 23, 1789 in North Carolina and came to Alabama in 1818 with his father and three brothers and two sisters. February 1, 1822 he bought the SW 1/4 Section 13, Township 11, Range 14, in the Searcy Community. (I have the land grant deed to this property which was the Jonathan Harrison home site, and was later the Josiah S. Cates home site, and is presently owned by Eric and Edwin Cates©EOC.)

"Jonathan married Barbary Wallace, the daughter of Abram Wallace and the sister of James and Seaborn Wallace. Seaborn married Selena Harrison, sister of Jonathan. The Wallace family owned property and lived in the same neighborhood. Barbary was born September 5, 1802 in South Carolina. Their first child was born when Jonathan was 31 and Barbary was 18."

Jonathan and Barbary are believed by descendants to be buried in the Moriah Primitive Baptist Church cemetery, since they were members of that church, but they are just as likely to have been buried in the Wallace-Harrison family cemetery near their home and their relatives' homes. No tombstones have survived for them in either location.
