He married Mayme Mathahs (born Mary Regina Mathahs) on May 10, 1915 in Bremer County, Iowa. They had two sons; Harold Anthony Fisher, Sr. and Kenneth Donald Fisher. Ernest and Mayme lived in the Waterlou, Iowa area when their two sons were born.
They lived by the Mississippi River in Rapid City, Rock Island County, Illinois during the 1940's and 1950's. He worked as an auto mechanic and also a machine operator at John Deere Plow Works in Moline, IL. They enjoyed gardening and had many strawberries and fruit trees. They lived in Temple City, California at 5346 El Monte Avenue from October 1962 to December 1968. They returned to the Quad Cities, Illinois area and lived with their son, Harold, until April 1969. They then moved to Moline, Illinois. His wife Mayme died on February 1, 1971. Ernest's memory was fading and he moved in with his son, Harold and daughter-in-law, Doris who lived in Rock Island, Illinois.
He broke his hip on December 18, 1975 and had surgery on December 19, 1975. He died at the age of 83 on December 29, 1975 at Lutheran Hospital in Moline, Illinois.
He was lovingly referred to as "BoBo".

Ernest L. Fisher, 83, who lived with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Harold A. Fisher, 2056 46th St., Rock Island, died Monday in Moline Lutheran Hospital.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the DeRoo Chapel and at 9:30 in Sacred Heart Church, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Memorial may be made to the church.
Visitation begins at 6:30 tonight and the rosary will be at 7 p.m.
Mr. Fisher was born in Campbell Hill and he married Mayme Mathahs in 1915 in Tripoli, Iowa. She died in 1971.
Until retiring in 1955 he was employed for 30 years at John Deere Plow Works, Moline.
He had lived in Rapids City, and in Temple City, Calif., before returning to Rock Island County in 1968.
In addition to his son, surviving are another son, Kenneth D., Big Island, Milan; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Harry Karsten, Stillville, and Mrs. Martha Wilkes, Arcadia, Calif.
