Son of James William Boykin and the former Clarissa Ann Owens of Columbus, Georgia

James Owen Boykin was married twice. On February 1st 1847, he married Amanda Pierce, daughter of Col. Benjamin Kendrick Pierce (older brother of Pres. Franklin Pierce) and the former Amanda Boykin, a cousin of his father. This union had four children. After Amanda's death in 1857, James married Anna Mary Swift, daughter of Samuel and Catherine Swift. Anna and James had three children.

During the Civil War, Dr. Boykin served in Company I, 3rd Alabama Cavalry Regiment as a captain and surgeon.
