Dr. Annette Ifama Wilder Kashif passed away peacefully on December 4,2012. She was raised in Jacksonville by professional educators James R. Wilder, Sr. and Tommie Lee Baldwin Wilder.
A product of the Duval County Public School System, she was a graduate of New Stanton Senior High School- Class of 1966. A Fulbright scholar, Annette Kashif holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Howard University with a specialty in Africa and the African Diaspora, a Master's in Education from Atlanta University and a Bachelor's in Language Arts from the University of Florida. Her major scholarly focus is comparative language, culture and history. She was a member of the English faculty at Florida A&M University, where she taught language, history, literature, humanities and education.
Dr. Kashif was the first Program Manager at the University of Florida's Institute of Black Culture, Chair of the General College at Florida Memorial University and Coordinator of Humanities at Bethune-Cookman University, where she pioneered its program in Africana Humanities. She was also a Life Member of the College Language Association, co-chairing its standing committee on Black Studies. In summer 2011, Dr. Kashif presented her research on African American onomastics at the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum in conjunction with its Gullee-Geechee/ Lorenzo Dow Tuner exhibit and co-chaired the African American Heritage Tour: An Educational Adventure. Her scholarship has attracted international and national attention - in England during the 2010 convention and study tour for UNESCO's Transatlantic Slave Trade Education Project, and in Egypt at the Ancient Kemetic Studies Conference. Dr. Kashif appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show as a guest expert on uniqueness and Africanisms in African American personal naming patterns. Her writings include Notes on the Origins and Evolution of African American Language, published by the National Park Service.
Dr. Annette 1. Kashif was predeceased by both parents, and her sister Ms. Essie M. Fason. She is survived by a devoted and loving husband, E. Omar Kashif, Sr. of Daytona Beach, FL; loving sons, A. Wali Kashif and E. Omar Kashif, II, both of Washington, D.C.; sisters, Ms. Joyce J. Tinsley and Ms. Jacqueline W. Quarterman; brother, James R. Wilder, Jr.; mother-in-law, Mrs. Georgia C. Wards, sisters-in-laws, Ms. Lillian Raley, Ms. Priscilla Morrison and Mrs. Gail Upson (Laronza, Sr.). brothers-in-law, Walter Wards, Sr., H. Shawn Kashif, Auston Wards, Jr. (Yvette), Garry Wards and Elijah Wards (Priscilla), god-daughter, Quiana Hall (Kelvin), god-son, Ysrair Young of Birmingham, AL;a number of other relatives and friends.
FUNERAL SERVICE will be held 11AM, Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 6910 New Kings Rd., Rev. Marvin C. Zanders, II, Pastor. Dr.Kashif will rest in the mortuary for visitation TUESDAY from 5PM until 8PM, and Wednesday at the church from 9AM until the hour of service. Interment will be in Edgewood Cemetery. The cortege will assemble at the church under the direction of ALPHONSO WEST MORTUARY, INC., 4409 Soutel Dr.
