Obituary, Coatesville Record 11-16-1938:
The first fatality from a hunting accident in this section was recorded when David Radcliffe, 78, of Atglen, died last evening at Coatesville hospital.
His death was the result of internal injuries sustained when he tripped and fell over a tree stump. Physicians said the immediate cause of death was peritonitis, induced by perforations of internal organs.
Long an ardent sportsman, Radcliffe went out alone on Armistice Day, with a beagle dog owned by a neighbor. He tripped on a root and fell across a low stump, he later told his physician. Sharp points on the stump were blamed for his injuries.
Radcliffe was unable to walk after the mishap, but his dog barked and attracted the attention of Edward Diem, of near Octorara church, who was working on a road nearby. Diem called the ambulance of the Washington Fire company, this city.
Radcliffe is survived by his wife, Eva, and the following children: Mrs. Charles Thompson, Coatesville; Wilbur Radcliffe, of Claymont; Mrs. M. Walter Bair, Lancaster; Mrs. Charles Stott, Parkesburg; Eugene Radcliffe, of Christiana; Earl Radcliffe, Kingston, Pa; and Vernon, Norman, John and Betty, at home.
He is also survived by the following brothers and sister: John Radcliffe, Atglen; Morrison, Parkesburg; Samuel, Villanova; Mrs. John Singer, Coatesville R. D., and Harry, Atglen. He is also survived by the following children of his first wife; Robert Radcliffe, of Christiana, and Everett Radcliffe, of Quarryville.
Deputy Coroner Harry E. Williams, Jr., conducted an investigation of the death and issued a certificate of death by accident. The body was removed to the Wentz Funeral home in Atglen.
The funeral will be held from the Wentz funeral home Friday afternoon, with interment at Mt. Eden cemetery. Radcliffe was a retired railroad foreman, and a member of Atglen Baptist church.
