He served in the United States Army in World War II as a Sergeant with the 743rd Tank Battalion, from D-Day (Omaha Beach) to the invasion of Germany. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium, and earned a Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
Mr. Jamell was employed as an inspector at the Fisher Governor Company, South Center St., Marshalltown, for many years, retiring in 1970. He was a member of St. Henry's Catholic Church, the American Legion Post 46, the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), and the NRA (National Rifle Association).

Visitation began at noon on Tuesday, October 7, 1986, at Pursel-Davis Funeral Home in Marshalltown. The Rosary was recited Wednesday, October 8, 7 p.m., at Pursel-Davis. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, October 9, 10:30 a.m., at St. Henry's Catholic Church, Marshalltown, with Fr. Thomas Braak officiating. Pallbearers were Salem Francis Jamell, Francis T. Jamell, Joseph Jamell, Thomas Jamell, James Jamell, Mark Holtzberg, and Rod Wheaton. Groups present included members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
