Les was the son of Fred and Olive Mathews Wolter. Fred was the greenskeeper at Elmwood Country Club, Marshalltown.
Les was raised and educated in Marshalltown. He attended Marshalltown schools until his senior year, which he finished at Waterloo (Iowa) East High School, graduating in 1938.

In March 1942, he entered the United States Army Air Forces. As a pilot, he flew B29 Bombers on 24 missions over Japan during World War II. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Major. Among the awards he received were: Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters, American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon, and WWII Victory Medal.

Les was united in marriage to Claire Marjorie Yungwirth, March 29, 1943,
in Roswell, New Mexico.

He attended Iowa State College, Ames, then moved to Marshalltown, Iowa, where he was employed by Kiowa Corporation for 43 years as an engineer and plant manager,
until his retirement in 1990.

Les was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Marshalltown; St. Mary Parish Council, the Knights of Columbus, (a former Grand Knight and 4th degree Knight), a past president and secretary of the Noon Lions Club, and a past president of the
Elmcrest Townhouse Association.

He was a magnificent dancer who also enjoyed playing cards with his friends,
and a golfer who received the Clyde MacIntire Award in 2005.
Les also enjoyed bowling and gardening.

Les passed away at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, at age 85.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Claire.

Diane (Erv) Beutler, Marshalltown;
Vicki (Dr. Steve) Frawley, Livermore, California;
Bob (Terry) Wolter, San Diego, California;
Debby (Dr. Bob) Friedrichs, Mason City, Iowa;
Tom (Linda) Wolter, Rome, Georgia;
Pat (Mary) Wolter, Holland, Michigan.
15 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; an infant daughter, Linda Kay;
and a brother Clarence "Stretch" Wolter.

Visitation, a Scripture Service, and a Knights of Columbus rosary
were held at Estel Perrin Avey Funeral Home.

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Marshalltown,
with Fr. Jim Miller as celebrant.

Burial with military honors by the Harry C. Harter Post of the VFW.
