Clara Amelia Brenner was born on July 29, 1897, in Delano, Minnesota, the daughter of Joseph and Anna Enwiller Brenner. Clara was half French and half German. Both parents came from Alsace Lorraine. She grew up and was educated in Delano. She had a brother and sister who died of tuberculosis.

Clara was visiting a cousin in Minnesota. Henry Hoganson was driving a team of horses with a load of coal. The cousin told Clara to wave. She did. Henry pulled over and they started to visit. That's how they met.

Clara married Henry Hoganson on June 17, 1919, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They lived there until moving to Marshalltown in 1923, where they farmed. Clara loved to garden and could grow any flower or vegetable. She made homemade bread. She was the one who milked the cows on the farm, harking back to growing up on her parents' farm.

Clara was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Ladies of St. Mary's, and St. Ann's Study Club.
