Born February 13, 1913, in Santiago, Cuba, Helio Portes was the son of Pedro and Lucila Portuendo Portes.

He received his undergraduate degree and his Ph.D. in Education from the University of Havana, and had taken post-doctoral studies in education at the Sorbonne University in Paris and at the University of Iowa.

Prior to coming to America, Dr. Portes was Inspector General of the Havana school system. In 1960, he brought his family to the United States as exiles from the Cuban Communist Revolution. The family came to Marshalltown in 1963. Dr. Portes became an American citizen in 1970. He was an instructor of foreign languages at Marshalltown Community College since 1963.

Dr. Portes died unexpectedly at his home, 2101 W. State St.,
Marshalltown, on Wednesday afternoon, November 28, 1973. He is survived by his wife, his mother; his 3 children: Dr. Alejandro Portes, Heliana, and Pedro; one brother, 2 sisters, and 4 grandchildren. Preceding him in death was his father in 1963.

Arrangements were by and Visitation was at Estel-Perrin Funeral Home, with a public Rosary at 8 p.m. on Friday, November 30. Requiem Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 1, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 11 W. Linn St., Marshalltown, Iowa 50158, with Rev. Raphael Ludwig, Associate Pastor, officiating. Attending the services were representatives of Marshalltown Community College, Marshalltown High School, Miller Junior High School, the School Superintendent's Office, and St. Rita's Study Club. Pallbearers were Leon Hockett, Richard Wuertz, Ray Frederick, Miguel Bretos, Emilio Soto, and Harry Stevenson.
