John William Hammond, 75, of Wapello, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, after a brief illness.

Born Jan. 23, 1931 in Louisa County, he was the son of Max Albert and Josephine Morrison Hammond. On Jan. 12, 1957, he married Mary Helmick at Louisa Center Church in Louisa County.

He was raised on a farm in Louisa County and attended school in Louisa County and Columbus Junction. He served his country in the Army during the Korean War. He worked in the Louisa County Engineers office for almost 40 years, before retiring in 1993. He was a member of the VFW Post 5166 of Wapello, the Odessa Chapter of Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sons, Max Hammond and Jeff Hammond, both of Wapello; two grandsons; two granddaughters; one great–grandson; his mother, Josephine Hammond of Columbus Junction; one brother, Richard Hammond of Wapello; one sister, Sharon Zimmer of LeMars; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and one sister.

Friends may call after 12 noon Wednesday at Dudgeon–McCulley Funeral Home, where the family will meet with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services for Mr. Hammond will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Dudgeon–McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello, with Max L. Hammond officiating. Burial will follow in Wapello Cemetery with military rites by the Glenn Allen VFW Post 5166.
