Oliver Little Stewart, Mayor of Piedmont and prominent business man and Legislator, was born in 1874, son of King and Martha (Little) Stewart. He was a member of the Piedmont School Board, Chief of Police for a time. Mayor from 1916-1922, and elected to Alabama State Legislature in 1922. He was a Mason, Shriner, Eastern Star, and Methodist. In March 1894, he married Hattie A. Formby, daughter of Frank M. Formby. Her mother was Ava V. Stewart, daughter of Capt. John T. Stewart, who was killed in the war between the states. They had: Carrie Lou, who married Norwood Barker, and whose daughter is Martha Doris Barker Green M.D, Birmingham. Amy who married Pine Hulsey, and whose daughter is Marcia, prominent Birmingham Math Teacher; Frank Formby who married Margaret Townly, and whose son is Frank Townley Stewart. Margaret Townley, native of Walker County, came to Piedmont with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Townley about 1920, when the former established a ice plant in Piedmont. Mr. Little Stewart conducted a funeral service in Piedmont, kept a large stock of caskets. His place of business was the present Maddox Garage on Main Street. The rock building was used for a number of businesses, including a chemical plant.
