Helen Balas, 90, of Warner Street, Plains Township, died Thursday in Little Flower Manor, Wilkes-Barre, where she had been a guest for four years.

Born April 27, 1905 in Plains Township, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Spak and Barbara Ishley Spak Popovich.

She attended St. Mary's of the Assumption parochial school in Wilkes-Barre.

During World War II, she was a Red Cross volunteer.

She was a member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church in Wilkes-Barre, St. Mary's Mother's Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin, on Oct. 3, 1966; son, Daniel, in 1986; daughter, Mary, 1989; brothers, Gabriel, George, Daniel, John and Nicholas Spak; sister, Mary Spak.

Surviving are a son Martin, Nanticoke; daughter, Mrs. William (Constance) Yateshin, Plains Township; sister, Charlotte Masloski, Plains Township; granddaughter, Mrs. Daniel (Diane) Lavin, with whom she had resided, Plains Township; a grandson; six granddaughters; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday from the Simon S. Russin Funeral Home Inc., 136 Maffett Street, Plains Township, with a Divine Liturgy in St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church. The Rev. Jeffrey Pawlush, chaplain of Little Flower Manor, officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery, Dallas.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Parastas services will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Monsignor John T. Sekellick officiating.
