John H. Maugans, 67,
A Union veteran soldier of the Civil War, died today January 31, 1906, at Wolfsville, Md., where he was formally engaged in business.

He leaves a widow Mrs. Anna Maugans and the following children, Harry G. Maugans of Hagerstown, Md., Mrs. Heefner of Georgia; and Russell and Rexford Maugans of Wolfsville, Md.

Note: Lieut. John H. Maugans, ex-merchant of Wolfsville, and of industrious habits, enlisted in Company K, 9th Indiana Infantry, as a private in the civil war, and fought in many hard battles in which his regiment engaged, was highly applauded by the late Gen. Nelson for its fighting qualities, justly merits the honor conferred upon him Gov. Morton of Indiana under whose administration he was commissioned. Mr. Maugans has quite a host of relatives and friends in this community. The late Cyrus Moser of Co. D, 6th Md., Infantry, a Valiant soldier, was his uncle, being a brother to his mother.

Death claims a Union Veteran!

John H. Maugans, 65,
For many years a leading and successful merchant of Wolfsville, Maryland, Frederick County, died at his home, in that place, about 7:30 o'clock Wednesday morning, of spinal and nervous trouble, after an illness of two years, aged 65 years.

Mr. Maugans was a veteran of the Civil War being one of the youngest volunteers from this vicinity to serve in the Union Army. After the war he bought the general merchandise store of the late Frederick Leatherman and was very successful.

He was a member of the M. E. Church for about 20 years, and also a member of the G.A.R.

He leaves a widow and these children: Harry G. Maugans, Hagerstown: Mrs. Nellie V. (Maugans) Heefner, Fitzgerald, Georgia, Rex and Russell Maugans, at home; brothers Jacob F. Maugans, of Wolfsville: Martin Maugans, East North street, this city; sister Mrs. William Wolf, of Wolfsville.

Funeral Friday at 10 a.m. Services in the U. B. Church and interment in the U.B. graveyard. Services by Rev. Martin, Thurmont, Maryland.

Note: Brothers Russell and Rexford Maugans were identical twins.

Note: John H. Maugans own a General store in Wolfsville, Maryland. He purchased the store from Frederick Leatherman. The store is now own by the Milton Harnes family and is still open today.

The Will of the late John H. Maugans, of Wolfsville, has been filed for probate in the Orphans Court. He makes the following bequest: To council of the Evangelical Lutheran church at Wolfsville, $100; to the German Reformed church at Wolfsville, $100; to the trustees of the United Brethren church at Wolfsville, $100; to the Methodist Episcopal church 4 miles north of Wolfsville, $100; to Mollie O. Blickenstaff, wife of Cyrus O. Blickenstaff, $50. All the rest and residue is bequeated to his widow, Annie M. Maugans, during her life or as long as she remains his widow, after which the property is to be sold and divided equally among his legal heirs. He appoints Alvin Sensenbaugh and Harry G. Maugans, as executors.
