Jacob immigrated in 1869 and was naturalized. He was operator/owner of a farm. Ernest, John and Mamie were farm laborers. They lived next door to Jacob's brother, William Holst (49), wife Pearl (46), children; Wynona (24), Kenneth (19), Rudolph (13), Harold (11), Ralph (8) and boarder, foster daughter, Margaret Owen (11/12).
On 8 April 1940 Jacob E. Holst (74), widower and son, John Holst (45) lived on Los Alamos Road in Santa Rosa, Santa Rosa Township, Sonoma County, California. He was still farming on his own place. John was a farm hand on a private ranch. NOTE: Several other family members lived close by.

Jacob Ernest Holst, widely known rancher who for many years has lived on Los Olivas road east of Santa Rosa, died Tuesday night at a hospital here. He had been ill only a short time.
He was the father of Ernest and John Holst of Santa Rosa, and the brother of John, Henry, Herman and Willie Holst of this city. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Andrewson, San Francisco; Mrs. Anna Owens, Santa Rosa, and Mrs. Margaret Sherman of this city.
He was the uncle of Kenneth Holst of Santa Rosa, and Miss Edith Adams of Santa Rosa. Holst was born in Minnesota. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Lafferty & Smith Memorial Chapel here.

Funeral services for Jacob E. Holst, pioneer rancher of the Los Alamos district, who died Tuesday, were held yesterday afternoon from the Welti Funeral Parlors. The Rev. Robert Thorp officiated. Pallbearers were: James, Kenneth and Elmer Holst, Percy and William Adams and Carl Stahl. Burial was in Odd Fellows cemetery.
Holst, who was 79, was the oldest member of the widely known Sonoma family. Born in Minnesota in 1865, he came to Santa Rosa 61 years ago, in 1883, at the age of 18, with his brother, the late Joseph A. Holst.
He is survived by two sons, Ernest J. and John Holst of this city, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Mamie Shilling, of Fresno. Brothers and sisters who survive him are Henry, John, William and Herman Holst, Mrs. Annie Owens and Mrs. Margaret Sherman, all of Santa Rosa and Mrs. Elizabeth Andrewsen of San Francisco. Twenty nieces and nephews also survive.
