Dr. Ralph C. Carpenter was born in Grafton, North Dakota, June 24, 1906, to Charles and Edna Hamel Carpenter.

He graduated from high school in Grafton, and from the University of North Dakota with BA, BS, and MS degrees. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and an Oxford Scholar.

After two years of medical school there, he transferred to the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in Philadelphia, graduating in 1933. He interned there, took his specialty in otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat), at the University of Iowa Hospital, and served two years on that hospital staff.
Dr. Carpenter came to Marshalltown in November, 1940, joining the practice of Drs. French and Cobb.

He married Ruth McMahon on June 4, 1938, in Algona, Iowa.

He served three years in the U.,S. Army during World War II, earning the rank of Major, spending all but a month overseas, mostly outside Cairo, Egypt. While there, he was called in consultation to see Madam Chiang Kai-Shek, for which he received a commendation from the Chinese Government.

He returned to Marshalltown in January, 1946, and retired in December, 1977.
He was a member of the Marshalltown Medical Society, the American Academy of Otolaryngology, the American College of Surgeons, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion.

Dr. Carpenter died at age 83.
Pursel-Davis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements, rosary, and vigil services.
Services were at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Marshalltown, with Revs. Ralph Simington and Tom Braak, and Deacon Ed Mead.
